Are you fond of reading as well as we do? We would like to share three books with inspiring insights that you can find on our corporate bookshelf.
Reading is a good way to reduce stress, increase knowledge, and find inspiration, that is why we always add new books to our bookshelves. All members of our team are welcome to take any book from the shelf, as well as share your own book with others – this way, you can support the library in Gamingtec.
1. The Phoenix Project. Gene Kim, Kevin Behr, and George Spafford
This novel is useful for everyone working in the IT industry. The plot is simple and familiar to all managers: a project called Phoenix should be launched in ninety days despite it is massively over budget and time-consuming.
To achieve this goal, Bill, an IT manager, establishes collaboration between Development, Quality Assurance, Compliancy, and Operations, and builds a DevOps organization. The rules he follows: the communication should flow from Development to IT Operations to the customer and back. The working practice is based on lots of repetitions and learning from success and failure.
2. How Google Works. Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg
We use Google browser day by day, so it is a good idea to know how this company works to be successful and creative. An insider’s guide to Google is provided by Executive Chairman and ex-CEO Eric Schmidt and former SVP of Products Jonathan Rosenberg.
Building our hiring process, we take into account Google Hiring Dos and Dont`s. Particularly, our HR Manager is looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated, and passionate people who inspire and work well with others, and avoids those who only live to work. We give preferences to candidates that are smarter and more knowledgeable than we are and do not hire those we can`t learn from.
One more insight from the book – all employees should be treated as equals in making decisions. All solutions should be discussed and agreed upon with the team.
And the third insight, we would like to highlight – give your employees room to be creative. Cafeteria with free food, weekly company-wide meetings, and challenging tasks – this is what Google does to create comfortable working conditions.
3. Turn the Ship Around!: A True Story of Turning Followers into Leaders. L. David Marquet
Navy captain David Marquet’s true story is inspirational because it is written based on his own personal experience. Being responsible for more than a hundred sailors, he worked in a stressful environment and had no room for mistake.
“Leadership should mean giving control rather than taking control and creating leaders rather than forging followers.” To build a community of leaders, David started to give control to mariners, and each member of the crew felt responsible for his actions. As a result, the submarine team changed a lot and the atmosphere became more engaging, where people are happier and healthier.
What other books can be useful for an IT team? We are looking forward to receiving your comments.
